We are pleased to announce that Waitrose have been awarded top marks in a global animal welfare audit conducted by Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare, which ranked 80 worldwide food companies by their management and reporting of animal welfare practices. Waitrose were ranked as one of just three candidates in the top tier, representing a ‘leadership position’ in welfare amongst the companies surveyed.

This recognition is testimony to the hard work of our farmers across all our livestock supply chains,’ stated Waitrose agricultural manager Duncan Sinclair, ‘We would like to thank them for this achievement – it is entirely down to their commitment and teamwork.’


Now in its third year, Business Benchmark on Farm Welfare (BBFAW), conducted in partnership with a number of leading animal welfare organisations was established with the purpose of furthering welfare practices within the food industry, and was the first global assessment of animal welfare amongst food companies.

Companies are assessed on their approach to welfare in three categories: management commitment and policy, governance and policy interpretation, and leadership and innovation.
