Our Welsh Black Scheme was set up in 2009, in order to provide Waitrose stores in Wales with a native product for the service counter. The Welsh Black is the only cattle breed native to Wales, and has existed in the Welsh hills and mountains since before the Roman invasion of Britain.
All Welsh Black cattle sourced by Dovecote Park must be sired by a pedigree Welsh Black bull that is registered with the Welsh Black Cattle Society, and must be born, raised and slaughtered within Wales.
The Welsh Blacks hardy nature coupled with its habit for browsing as well as grazing makes it ideally suited for rougher pasture. This ability to survive on harsher land such as heathland and moorland make the cattle an ideal candidate for conservation grazing and increases the sustainability of the breed.
