We are pleased to announce that Waitrose have been awarded Best Retailer at the Compassion in World Farming Retail Awards, held in Milan on Tuesday 9th June.
The Best
Retailer award recognises retailers across Europe on their approach to farm
animal welfare, with the prize given to the company scoring highest overall in
surveys for broilers, laying hens, pigs, dairy cows and
calves.
This
award marks the fifth occasion Waitrose have been awarded Best Retailer since
the establishment of the award in 2004.
Heather Jenkins, Waitrose Director of Buying and
Agriculture Strategy, accepted the award at the ceremony in Milan, stating:
“We are delighted to have won the Compassion
in World Farming Best Retailer award for a fifth time and we are indebted to
the skill and commitment of our farmers. Waitrose is dedicated to treating
animals with care and respect and we are so pleased that Waitrose and our
farmers have been recognised in this way by such an important organisation as
Compassion in World Farming.”
Tracey Jones, Director of Food Business,
Compassion in World Farming said: "Every
year I am so impressed by the commitment and drive of our Award winners to make
genuine improvements to the lives of millions of farm animals.
We are
delighted to recognise Waitrose for their outstanding performance in our
Supermarket Survey. Their constant aspiration to be the best and to do
what is right for animals and for their customers makes them true leaders and
they justly deserve the title of Best Retailer."
Commitment
to animal welfare has always been a central point of our supply relationship
with Waitrose, and thus we were delighted to see them honoured once again at
such an important event. We are also very proud that our Cattle Connect scheme,
which provides a viable outlet for calves from the dairy herd, was among the various
supply chains that this award recognised.
